Cloverfield (The Review) *********

well let’s start off with me saying that it was worth the hype.  I love a good monster movie and truth be known there have not really been that many good ones.  I mean come on 1998’s Godzilla?  That was bad.

Anyway let’s flash forward to 2008.  The Producer J.J. Abrams, had a brilliant idea that I feel worked to save The Blair Witch Project.  Make it a bit more realistic with a normal video camera.  All the while make it shown the person running the camera (in this case HUD played by T.J. Miller) really was not a pro.

OK here is the story (I will try not to spoil the movie for you by telling who dies’s and how, for that info either see the movie or go here.)  OK Rob (Played by Michael Stahl-David) is leaving America for a job in Japan.  So of course his friends throw him a going away party.   The main ones for the movie though are His brother Jason (Mike Vogel) Jason’s beautiful girlfriend Lilly (Jessica Lucas) The above mention HUD who is video taping everyone saying some words to the departing Rob, and A girl who barely knew the group Marlena (Lizzy Caplan).  Well during the party you see Rob and (you think his girlfriend) Beth (Odette Yustman) Get into a heated argument due to her bringing a date to the party.  And then we find out that Rob and Beth while not officially dating did sleep together 1 night and he never called her back (Mistake on his part) so her and her date leave.  well HUD (still taping everything) and Jason go and try to talk Rob into calling her back when an explosion rock’s there area.  most of the next say 15 min. can be seen in the trailer’s.  but they see on the news about a tanker overturning next to the Statue of Liberty.  They rush to the roof in time to see an explosion.  They run to the stairs to avoid being hit by flaming debris.  and the next explosion you see is the Statue of Liberty losing her head.  The rest would spoil the movie so I will go in to talk about what I like.

again I can’t say enough how I like the direction that Mr. Abrams took with the movie.  In fact when you finally get to see the monster(s)you will see why he did not show them on the commercials.  They are like nothing we have seen yet.  The death’s that are shown are pretty cool.  I mean the Tail smash and bombing we’re unoriginal.  But the exploding person and the devouring was pretty cool. The Special effect’s looked real cool.

I give this movie a 9 out of 10 star’s only due to some questions left unanswered.  What happened to the monster?  Where did it come from?  Did Lilly survive?  How does a bite cause people to explode?  Was operation Hammerdown  a Nuke attack or some other bomb attack?

I am sure that those questions will be answered during the DVDs commentary.  But just in case I plan on seeing the movie at least once more in the Theaters.
